New York Title Transfer Fee Calculator
Use this New York title transfer fee calculator for an ordinary private-party purchase of a New York-titled passenger vehicle. It separates the $50 title fee, residence-based sales or use tax, and supported registration, county, MCTD, and plate costs when selected.

Ordinary private sale
What This New York Title Transfer Calculator Covers
The calculator supports an ordinary purchase from a private seller when the vehicle follows the normal New York title path and is an ordinary private passenger vehicle. It combines the purchase-price tax, the certificate-of-title fee, and registration-related charges only when the buyer selects registration.
It does not treat every ownership change as the same transaction. Transfers involving gifts, family members, salvage, liens, missing documents, out-of-state tax credits, or specialized vehicles can use different tax, document, or fee rules.
Certificate of title
The Supported New York Title Fee Is $50
New York DMV lists a $50 certificate-of-title fee for the supported transaction. The engine adds that amount once and does not invent a separate generic ownership-transfer fee.
The $50 title fee is only one part of the total. A private-party purchaser can also owe sales or use tax, plus registration, county, MCTD, and plate charges when registration is due.
Purchaser residence
Sales or Use Tax on a New York Private-Party Purchase
The tax estimate uses the purchaser's New York residence taxing jurisdiction. It includes the 4% state portion, the applicable local portion, and the separate 0.375% MCTD sales-tax component where the chosen jurisdiction is inside the district.
Dealer location and mailing ZIP code are not substituted for the verified jurisdiction. Use the New York car sales tax calculator when you need a tax-only breakdown.
No dealer trade treatment
A Private-Party Purchase Does Not Get a Dealer Trade-In Credit
The supported title-transfer path does not subtract a private exchange or another separately sold vehicle from the taxable purchase price. New York's qualifying trade-in treatment applies to a seller-accepted trade used directly as part payment and intended for resale—not an ordinary purchase between private parties.
The calculator therefore uses the entered private-party purchase price without a dealer trade-in deduction. The New York trade-in sales tax guide explains the supported dealer scenario separately.
When registration is selected
Registration, County Vehicle Use Tax, and MCTD Fees
If registration is due and selected, the engine applies the DMV's two-year passenger registration amount for the vehicle's unladen weight. Six-cylinder and electric vehicles use the verified $32.50 minimum only when the normal weight bracket would be lower.
The registration result can also include county vehicle use tax and the $50 two-year MCTD registration supplement. These are separate concepts: county vehicle use tax depends on the county mapping and weight rules, while the MCTD supplement applies in the district's 12 counties. Learn more in the vehicle use-tax guide and MCTD fee guide.
Standard plate choice
$25 New Plates or a $10 Eligible Plate Transfer
The supported registration estimate adds one standard plate path: $25 for new plates or $10 for an eligible transfer of New York plates. It never adds both.
If the buyer is unsure whether the existing plates can be transferred, the engine keeps the result partial and displays both possible plate amounts rather than choosing one.

New York title-transfer questions
Frequently asked questions
How much is the New York vehicle title fee?
The supported certificate-of-title fee is $50. Sales or use tax and registration-related charges can make the complete transfer cost higher.
Is sales tax due on a New York private-party car purchase?
An ordinary private-party purchase can be subject to sales or use tax at the purchaser's residence jurisdiction rate. The calculator does not assume an exemption.
Does a private-party buyer receive a trade-in tax credit?
No dealer trade-in deduction is applied in this private-party calculator. An ordinary private exchange is outside the supported seller-accepted resale scenario.
When does the calculator include registration?
Registration is included only when the buyer selects it and the vehicle follows the supported ordinary passenger path. The result then adds the weight fee, applicable county and MCTD amounts, and one plate choice.
How much are standard New York plates in this estimate?
The engine uses $25 for new standard plates or $10 for an eligible New York plate transfer. It does not add both.
Can I use this calculator for a gift, family transfer, salvage vehicle, or out-of-state tax credit?
No. Those transactions can follow different rules and are explicitly outside this calculator's supported ordinary private-sale path.
