How New York Vehicle Registration Fees Are Calculated

For an ordinary private passenger vehicle, New York's base registration charge is a two-year fee determined by unladen weight. County vehicle use tax, the $50 two-year MCTD registration supplement, and either a $25 new-plate fee or $10 eligible plate-transfer fee can then be added.

The $50 certificate-of-title fee is not part of this registration-only estimate. It belongs in a broader tax, title, and license calculation.

Official DMV schedule

Two-Year Weight-Based Passenger Registration

NY DMV's MV-202 schedule uses exact weight brackets rather than a homemade per-pound formula. The first bracket covers 0 through 1,650 pounds at $26. Fees increase through the final 6,951-pound-and-over bracket at $140.

The calculator uses the complete official table. Enter the unladen weight from the title, ownership document, or other reliable vehicle record; do not substitute payload or gross combined weight.

Six-cylinder and electric-vehicle minimum

DMV states that the minimum two-year registration fee for a vehicle with six or more cylinders and for an electric vehicle is $32.50. This is a floor: when the normal weight bracket is already higher, another $32.50 is not added.

County charge

New York County Vehicle Use Tax

County vehicle use tax depends on the county of residence and, in some counties, the passenger vehicle's weight. Not every county imposes it.

  • Regular chart counties: $10 for two years at 3,500 pounds or less; $20 at 3,501 pounds or more.
  • Suffolk and Westchester: $30 for two years at 3,500 pounds or less; $60 at 3,501 pounds or more.
  • New York City boroughs and Nassau: $30 for two years for the supported passenger-vehicle path.
  • Counties outside the DMV use-tax chart receive no estimated county vehicle use tax.

Separate district fee

MCTD Registration Supplement

Residents of Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens, Richmond, Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester counties pay a $25 annual—or $50 two-year—Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District registration supplement.

This registration supplement is different from the 0.375% MCTD sales-tax component. One is a fixed registration charge; the other is calculated from a taxable sale.

Plate choice

New Plates, Plate Transfers, and the Title Fee

The supported additional plate fee is $25 when new standard New York plates are needed or $10 when eligible New York plates are transferred. The calculator never adds both.

If eligibility is uncertain, choose “Not sure.” The result remains partial and displays the two possible plate amounts separately. Custom, personalized, historical, and other special plates are outside this calculator.

The separate $50 title fee is intentionally excluded from the registration-related total.

New York registration questions

Frequently asked questions

How much is car registration in New York?

The base two-year passenger fee depends on unladen weight and ranges from $26 to $140 under MV-202. County vehicle use tax, an MCTD supplement, and one plate fee can raise the total.

Is New York passenger registration annual or two-year?

The MV-202 passenger schedule used here shows two-year fees. County use-tax and MCTD amounts are also calculated on the two-year basis.

Do six-cylinder and electric vehicles pay an extra $32.50?

No. $32.50 is the minimum two-year registration fee for those vehicles, not a surcharge. It changes only a lower weight-bracket amount.

Does every New York county charge vehicle use tax?

No. DMV's chart identifies the counties that impose the tax. The amount can also vary by weight, with different rules for Suffolk, Westchester, New York City, and Nassau.

What is the New York MCTD registration fee?

Residents of the 12 listed MCTD counties pay a $50 two-year supplemental registration fee. It is separate from both county use tax and MCTD sales tax.

Are title and plate fees included?

The calculator includes either $25 for new standard plates or $10 for an eligible transfer. It does not include the separate $50 title fee.
