Direct answer

How Much Is New York Car Sales Tax?

New York applies a 4% state sales tax to the supported taxable vehicle amount. Local tax is added using the purchaser's residence taxing jurisdiction. Purchasers in the MCTD—which includes New York City and seven surrounding counties—also pay a separate 0.375% MCTD sales-tax component, which is already included in the jurisdiction's combined rate.

The NY car tax rate therefore varies by residence. Publication 718 lists combined rates by county and separately reporting cities. A dealer address or ZIP code alone can point to the wrong jurisdiction because postal boundaries do not reliably match tax boundaries.

Calculation method

How New York Vehicle Sales Tax Works

For a supported purchase, the calculator begins with the vehicle selling price, adds charges identified as taxable, and subtracts qualifying seller discounts and a qualifying trade-in credit.

Vehicle price + taxable additions − seller discount − qualifying trade-in credit = taxable amount

The taxable amount is then multiplied by the selected jurisdiction's combined rate. Results separate the 4% state amount, local tax, and any 0.375% MCTD portion so the total is easier to audit.

Residence controls the rate

Which New York Sales Tax Jurisdiction Applies?

For an individual New York resident buying a motor vehicle, the relevant rate is generally the rate for the purchaser's residence taxing jurisdiction. It is not automatically the rate at the dealership.

Select the residence county first, then choose a separately listed city when Publication 718 requires one. Do not rely on a ZIP code by itself: one postal area can overlap more than one taxing jurisdiction.

Trade-in treatment

Does a Trade-In Reduce New York Car Sales Tax?

A qualifying trade-in accepted by the seller can reduce the taxable receipt when it is applied directly to the purchased vehicle and the seller intends to resell the trade. The calculator deducts the allowed trade-in value only when that supported treatment is selected.

Trade-in value is not trade equity

The seller's trade allowance and the loan payoff are separate. If a seller allows $10,000 for a trade with a $7,000 payoff, the supported tax deduction is still based on the $10,000 allowance. The $3,000 equity affects the deal's payment side, not the sales-tax deduction.

Private-party barter, proceeds from selling a vehicle elsewhere, and unsupported exchanges are not automatically treated as qualifying trade-ins.

Taxable receipt

Seller Discounts and Taxable Additions

A qualifying seller discount reduces the taxable amount. Verified taxable additions increase it. Enter only a charge whose New York tax treatment is known; dealer documentation fees, optional products, financing costs, and unclear line items should not be guessed into the calculator.

The taxable amount cannot fall below zero. Title, registration, and plate costs are outside this sales-tax-only result.

New York sales tax questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the New York car sales tax rate?

The state portion is 4%. Local tax is added based on the purchaser's residence taxing jurisdiction, and a separate 0.375% MCTD component applies within the district. The resulting combined rate varies by jurisdiction.

Does the dealer location determine NY vehicle sales tax?

No. For an individual New York resident, motor vehicle tax generally follows the purchaser's residence taxing jurisdiction. The dealership can be located somewhere else.

Can I use my ZIP code to choose the tax rate?

Not safely by itself. The Tax Department warns that postal zones often do not match political boundaries. Use the correct county and separately listed city jurisdiction.

Is a used car taxed in New York?

A taxable used-vehicle purchase is generally subject to the applicable state, local, and MCTD sales or use tax unless a specific exemption or credit applies. Special private-party valuation issues are outside this calculator.

Does a trade-in reduce New York vehicle sales tax?

A qualifying seller-accepted trade-in can reduce the taxable receipt when it is applied directly to the purchase and the seller intends resale. An unsupported private barter or unrelated sale is not automatically deductible.

Does my trade-in loan payoff change the tax deduction?

No. The allowed trade-in value and outstanding payoff are separate. The payoff changes equity and financing, not the qualifying trade-in amount used by this calculator.
