Direct answer

What New York Tax, Title and License Includes

A supported New York tax, title, and license estimate combines the vehicle's state and local sales tax, any MCTD sales-tax component, two-year weight-based registration, county vehicle use tax, any MCTD registration supplement, the $50 title fee, and either a new-plate or plate-transfer fee.

The amount depends on the purchaser's residence taxing jurisdiction, taxable vehicle amount, unladen weight, county of residence, and plate choice. It is not a single statewide percentage or flat fee.

Sales-tax portion

New York State, Local, and MCTD Vehicle Sales Tax

The tax engine starts with the vehicle selling price, adds verified taxable additions, and subtracts qualifying seller discounts and a qualifying seller-accepted trade-in. A loan payoff remains separate from the trade-in allowance.

New York's state portion is 4%. Local tax follows the purchaser's residence taxing jurisdiction. Within the MCTD—which includes New York City and seven surrounding counties—a separate 0.375% MCTD sales-tax component is included in the combined rate.

Dealer location or ZIP code alone should not be used to choose a tax jurisdiction. Publication 718 identifies the county and separately reporting city jurisdictions.

Registration and title

New York Title and Registration Fees

The registration portion uses the exact two-year MV-202 passenger fee bracket for the vehicle's unladen weight. The $32.50 six-cylinder and electric-vehicle rule is applied only as a minimum when the normal bracket would be lower.

  • Two-year passenger registration from the official weight table
  • County vehicle use tax where the DMV chart applies
  • $50 two-year MCTD registration supplement in the 12 district counties
  • $50 certificate-of-title fee
  • $25 new standard plates or $10 eligible plate transfer

If plate eligibility is unknown, the result shows a known subtotal and lists both possible plate amounts rather than presenting an exact TTL total.

Do not combine the rules

MCTD Sales Tax vs. MCTD Registration Supplement

These are different charges even though both use the MCTD name.

MCTD sales-tax component

The 0.375% component is calculated from the taxable vehicle amount and is part of the selected combined sales-tax rate.

MCTD registration supplement

The registration supplement is a fixed $25 per year, or $50 for the supported two-year registration term. It is added independently of the vehicle's price or taxable amount.

Scope of the total

Vehicle Price Plus TTL Is Not an Out-the-Door Price

The calculator shows estimated TTL and, when the plate choice is known, vehicle price plus TTL. That second figure is still not an out-the-door price.

An OTD total can include dealer documentation charges, taxable dealer additions, optional products, financing-related amounts, and other seller-controlled charges. Those items are intentionally outside this New York TTL calculator.

New York TTL questions

Frequently asked questions

What does TTL include in New York?

For the supported path, TTL includes state and local vehicle sales tax, any MCTD sales tax, two-year passenger registration, county vehicle use tax, any MCTD registration supplement, the $50 title fee, and one plate fee.

How is New York vehicle sales tax calculated in the TTL estimate?

The applicable combined rate follows the purchaser's residence taxing jurisdiction. The taxable amount can include verified additions and can be reduced by qualifying seller discounts and a qualifying seller-accepted trade-in.

How much is the New York title fee?

The supported certificate-of-title fee is $50. It is included in the TTL calculator but excluded from the registration-only calculator.

Are MCTD sales tax and the MCTD registration fee the same?

No. MCTD sales tax is a 0.375% component applied to the taxable amount. The MCTD registration supplement is a fixed $50 for the supported two-year term.

Does this calculator include new plates or a plate transfer?

Yes. It includes either $25 for new standard plates or $10 for an eligible New York plate transfer. If the choice is uncertain, the result remains partial.

Is vehicle price plus TTL the out-the-door price?

No. Dealer-controlled fees, optional products, financing, and other seller amounts can make the final out-the-door price higher.
