New York vehicle use tax is a county charge collected with registration in counties listed by NY DMV. It is separate from vehicle sales tax, and some counties do not impose it at all.

Vehicle use tax is part of registration, not sales tax

Sales tax is calculated from the supported taxable vehicle amount and purchaser jurisdiction. County vehicle use tax is a separate registration-related amount based on the residence county and, for some counties, passenger vehicle weight.

The registration calculator shows the county amount as its own line item alongside the two-year weight-based registration fee, any MCTD supplement, and one plate fee.

Why vehicle weight changes some county amounts

The county chart divides applicable passenger vehicles at 3,500 pounds. A vehicle at exactly 3,500 pounds stays in the lower tier; 3,501 pounds moves into the higher tier. NYC boroughs and Nassau use the flat passenger-vehicle amount instead.

Use the unladen weight from a reliable ownership or vehicle record. This county threshold is separate from the detailed MV-202 weight brackets used for the base registration fee.

The values come from the existing New York registration engine and verified county mapping. Westchester also belongs to the MCTD, so its separate $50 two-year registration supplement can apply in addition to county vehicle use tax.

Other New York registration charges remain separate

County vehicle use tax is only one part of registration. The MV-202 weight-based fee, MCTD supplement, and plate charge remain separate, while the $50 title fee belongs in the broader TTL calculation. Learn how the district charge works in the New York MCTD fees guide.
