New York Car Sales Tax: How It Works in 2026
New York car sales tax starts with a 4% state portion, then local and MCTD tax can apply based on the purchaser's residence taxing jurisdiction.
Published and verified October 3, 2026
New York car sales tax includes a 4% state portion plus the local rate for the purchaser's residence taxing jurisdiction. Within the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District, the combined rate also includes a separate 0.375% MCTD sales-tax component.
The parts of a New York vehicle sales-tax rate
| Component | How it applies |
|---|---|
| New York State portion | 4% of the supported taxable amount |
| Local sales tax | Varies by the purchaser's county or separately listed city jurisdiction |
| MCTD sales-tax component | 0.375% within the MCTD; included in the published combined rate |
Publication 718 lists the total combined rate for each reporting jurisdiction. The calculator separates that total into state, local, and MCTD portions so buyers can see what produces the estimate.
Which location determines New York car sales tax?
For an individual New York resident buying a motor vehicle, the applicable rate generally follows the purchaser's residence taxing jurisdiction. The dealership's address does not automatically control the rate.
A ZIP code alone is also unreliable because postal zones do not necessarily match county and city tax boundaries. Select the residence county, then choose a separately listed city when Publication 718 provides one.
How the taxable vehicle amount is calculated
For the ordinary purchase supported by CarBuyerKit, start with the selling price, add charges verified as taxable, and subtract a qualifying seller discount and qualifying seller-accepted trade-in credit.
Vehicle price + taxable additions − seller discount − qualifying trade-in = taxable amount
Taxable additions
A charge that forms part of the taxable sale can increase the receipt. Buyers should classify the actual line item rather than assume every dealer charge has the same treatment.
Seller discounts
A genuine seller discount can reduce the supported taxable amount. A down payment or financing credit is not entered as a seller discount.
Qualifying trade-ins
A trade-in can reduce the taxable receipt when the seller accepts it, applies it directly to the purchase, and intends resale. Trade value is not the same as equity after a loan payoff.

Sales tax is not the full vehicle cost
Title, registration, county vehicle use tax, the MCTD registration supplement, plates, dealer-controlled charges, and financing remain separate. Use the New York tax, title and license calculator for the supported government-cost combination.
