California Title Transfer Fee Calculator

Supported transfer cost
What This California Title Transfer Fee Calculator Includes
The calculator supports one deliberately narrow path: an ordinary private-party purchase of a private passenger vehicle already titled in California. It separates the following amounts:
- The ordinary $15 California ownership-transfer fee
- Estimated use tax at the selected registration-location rate
- Supported registration, CHP, estimated VLF, and TIF when registration is selected
- An estimated transfer cost combining only those supported amounts
It does not present a single flat California car title transfer cost for every situation. The current title, transaction type, registration status, exemptions, timing, and vehicle class can change the real DMV total.
Ordinary ownership transfer
The Supported California Title Transfer Fee Is $15
California DMV Appendix 1F lists a $15 transfer fee for the supported ownership-change path. The engine adds that amount to the use-tax estimate and, when requested, the supported registration components.
The fee is only one part of the transaction. A private-party purchaser can also owe California use tax, and registration-related charges can be due depending on the vehicle's status.
A different DMV service
Why the Calculator Does Not Add a Generic $28 Title Only Charge
DMV's $28 Title Only amount is a specific service, not a universal ownership-transfer fee for every vehicle purchase. This calculator does not substitute that amount for the ordinary $15 transfer fee or add both amounts together.
Replacement titles, title-only applications, rush services, and other document requests are outside this California DMV title transfer estimate.
Registration-location tax
California Use Tax on a Private-Party Vehicle Transfer
A California private-party vehicle purchase can be subject to use tax. The engine applies the official October 1, 2026 CDTFA rate for the city or county area where the buyer will register the vehicle.
The 7.25% statewide base can be increased by applicable district taxes. The calculator uses purchase price for the supported estimate and does not assume an exemption. Learn more in the California car sales tax guide or check a location directly with the California sales tax calculator.
When selected
Registration Charges Included in the Transfer Estimate
If supported registration is due and the buyer selects it, the result adds the existing ordinary private-passenger registration estimate. That estimate combines the supported registration component, CHP fee, estimated VLF, and the applicable TIF bracket.
County and district DMV charges, expired-registration penalties, smog-related costs, special plates, and conditional fees remain outside the total. The California registration fee calculator itemizes the same supported components, while the VLF guide explains the value-based estimate.
Scope boundaries
Transfers This Calculator Does Not Estimate
The calculator stops instead of guessing when the selected transaction is outside the verified ordinary California-title path. Unsupported scenarios include:
- Vehicles currently titled outside California
- Salvage or revived-salvage transactions
- Gifts and family transfers
- Lien sales and unusual ownership proceedings
- Special plates, uncommon exemptions, and non-passenger vehicle classes
These paths can require different documents, exemptions, taxes, or fees and should be confirmed directly with DMV and CDTFA.
Current source conflict
Why the Late-Transfer Penalty Is Not Calculated
CarBuyerKit currently excludes the late-transfer penalty from calculated totals because official California DMV sources do not present a consistent current amount.
DMV's public registration-fees material and title-transfer checklist do not align with the amount shown in Appendix 1F. This SEO phase does not choose between them. The calculator displays the late penalty as not computed and directs buyers to confirm any timing charge with DMV.

California title-transfer questions
Frequently asked questions
What is the ordinary California title transfer fee?
The supported ownership-transfer fee is $15 for the ordinary California-titled vehicle path modeled here. Use tax and registration-related charges can make the total higher.
Does a private-party California transfer include use tax?
A private-party vehicle purchase can be subject to use tax. This calculator applies the selected October 2026 registration-location rate to the entered purchase price without assuming an exemption.
Is the $28 Title Only charge added to every transfer?
No. Title Only is a separate DMV service. The calculator does not use $28 as a generic ownership-transfer fee and does not add it to the ordinary $15 transfer.
When are registration charges included?
They are included only when the user selects the supported registration estimate for an ordinary private passenger vehicle. Conditional and expired-registration charges are excluded.
Does this calculator estimate an out-of-state title transfer?
No. Out-of-state, salvage, gift, family, lien-sale, and other unusual paths require separate verification and are outside the calculator's scope.
What late-transfer penalty does CarBuyerKit use?
None. Current official DMV sources conflict, so the calculator does not choose an amount or include a late penalty in the estimated total.
