California Tax, Title & License Calculator
California TTL is a group of government charges, not one flat fee. This California tax title and license calculator combines supported sales or use tax, registration, CHP, estimated VLF, TIF, and the $15 transfer fee when a supported used California-titled vehicle changes ownership.

Government purchase costs
What California Tax, Title and License Includes
TTL is shorthand for tax, title, and license, but a California vehicle transaction can contain several distinct government charges. For the supported ordinary private-passenger path, this calculator can include:
- California sales or use tax at the registration-location rate
- The 7.25% statewide base and applicable district-tax portion
- $76 registration component and $34 CHP fee
- Estimated VLF at 0.65% of vehicle value
- The applicable Transportation Improvement Fee bracket
- $15 transfer fee for a supported used California-title ownership transfer
County and district DMV charges, conditional smog or RIF charges, special services, penalties, and unsupported title paths remain outside the total.
Itemized calculation
How California TTL Is Calculated
Sales or use tax
The calculator applies the official October 1, 2026 CDTFA rate for the city or county area where the vehicle will be registered. A qualifying seller discount can reduce the taxable amount, while verified taxable additions increase it. Trade-in value does not reduce California's taxable selling price.
Registration, CHP, VLF, and TIF
The supported registration estimate combines $76 for registration, $34 for CHP, estimated VLF at 0.65% of entered value, and the exact TIF value bracket.
Ownership transfer
A $15 transfer fee is included only when the selected path is a used vehicle already titled in California with ownership changing. It is not added to the supported new-vehicle original-registration path.
California title treatment
Why There Is No Generic $28 Title Fee
California DMV lists a $28 Title Only service, but that is a specific transaction rather than a universal title charge for every ordinary purchase. This calculator does not repurpose it as a generic new-vehicle title fee.
The supported title paths are deliberately narrow: new vehicle with original registration, or a used California-titled vehicle purchase. Replacement titles, title-only applications, out-of-state vehicles, salvage transactions, lien sales, gifts, family transfers, and rush title services are not calculated.
Keep charges separate
Dealer Fees Are Not Government TTL
Dealer documentation charges, optional service contracts, protection products, accessories, financing costs, and other seller-controlled fees are not government title or registration charges. A dealer charge may affect the taxable selling amount when California treats it as taxable, but that does not turn it into a DMV fee.
This result is also not an out-the-door price. An OTD price can include dealer-controlled charges, optional products, and other seller amounts that this TTL calculator does not collect.
Conditional charges
Local DMV, RIF, and Smog Fees May Still Apply
County and district DMV charges vary by location and are not included. The possible $121 Road Improvement Fee is not added because the transaction facts needed to determine whether a qualifying ZEV owes it are not collected.
DMV lists an $8 smog transfer fee, but it applies only in qualifying transfer circumstances. The calculator discloses possible smog-related charges without automatically adding them or estimating private inspection-station costs.

California TTL questions
Frequently asked questions
What does TTL include in California?
For the supported path, TTL includes vehicle sales or use tax, district tax, registration, CHP, estimated VLF, TIF, and a $15 transfer fee only when a used California-titled vehicle changes ownership.
How much are California tax, title, and license fees?
The total depends on vehicle price, the registration-location tax rate, seller discounts or taxable additions, vehicle value, TIF bracket, and whether a supported ownership transfer is occurring.
Is there a standard $28 California title fee on every purchase?
No. DMV's $28 Title Only fee is a specific service. This calculator does not add it as a generic fee to every new or used vehicle purchase.
When does the $15 California transfer fee apply?
This calculator adds $15 only for its supported used California-titled vehicle ownership-transfer path. It does not add the fee to the supported new-vehicle original-registration path.
Are dealer fees included in California TTL?
No. Dealer-controlled charges and optional products are not government TTL. A taxable dealer charge can affect sales tax while remaining separate from DMV fees.
Is this the out-the-door price?
No. The result is vehicle price plus supported government TTL. Dealer charges, optional products, financing, and other seller amounts can make an out-the-door price higher.
