SPV explained

How a Texas private-party vehicle purchase is calculated

Find the taxable value

For a normal private-party used-vehicle purchase, Texas compares the actual purchase price with 80% of the full SPV. The larger amount becomes the taxable value. You do not automatically pay tax on the full SPV.

Taxable value = greater of purchase price or 80% of full SPV

Add title and registration costs

The calculator adds the title fee for the purchaser's county of residence. If current Texas registration transfers, it uses the $2.50 transfer path. Otherwise, it calculates the supported full-registration charges from the vehicle details you enter.

Rules that affect private sales

Important Texas private-party purchase rules

  • SPV is not the automatic tax base. The normal comparison uses 80% of full SPV, not 100% of SPV.
  • The higher comparison amount controls. If the purchase price is higher than 80% of SPV, the purchase price is used.
  • A certified appraisal has a floor. A qualifying appraisal cannot reduce the taxable value below the actual purchase price.
  • Registration paths are alternatives. The $2.50 current-registration transfer and full registration are not added together.
  • Ordinary title transfers have a 30-day timeline. Complete the title and tax process within 30 days in the ordinary case.

Buyer paperwork

Documents commonly needed for a Texas private sale

Official Texas guidance commonly calls for the following items in an ordinary private-party transfer:

  • A properly assigned original vehicle title
  • A completed Application for Texas Title and/or Registration, Form 130-U
  • A lien release when a recorded lien has been satisfied
  • Accepted identification and proof of insurance
  • Applicable inspection or emissions documentation

This is general information, not legal advice. Ask the county tax office to confirm the documents required for your transaction.
