What this Texas registration calculator includes
This calculator combines the statewide charges that can be determined from the information you enter. It keeps fees that depend on your county or inspection station separate instead of inventing an exact DMV total.
- Base registration fee for a passenger vehicle, motorcycle or supported weight bracket
- $1 TexasSure insurance verification fee and $4.75 processing and handling fee
- $7.50 annual or $16.75 qualifying initial two-year inspection replacement fee
- $200 annual fee for a qualifying fully electric car or truck
- $2.75 state emissions inspection portion when the vehicle, county and date qualify
- A known county or local fee you enter, within the current $0 to $31.50 range
Calculation method
How Texas vehicle registration fees are calculated
First, the tool selects the base registration amount. A passenger vehicle or light truck weighing 6,000 pounds or less uses a $50.75 base fee, while a motorcycle or moped uses $30. Heavier vehicles use the applicable weight bracket.
It then adds the TexasSure and processing fees. For a normal non-commercial vehicle, it adds the replacement fee that matches the registration term: $7.50 for an annual registration or $16.75 for a qualifying new vehicle's initial two-year registration. Qualifying EV, emissions and entered local charges are added last.
Rules that change the result
Important Texas registration fee rules
- Vehicle category and weight matter. The base amount changes for motorcycles and vehicles above 6,000 pounds.
- Commercial inspection rules differ. This calculator does not add the normal non-commercial inspection replacement fee to a commercial vehicle.
- The EV fee is limited. It applies to qualifying fully electric cars and trucks up to 10,000 pounds, not hybrids or motorcycles.
- Local fees vary. Enter the verified county amount if you know it; otherwise the calculator labels it as not included.
- Emissions rules depend on the vehicle, county and date. Bexar County does not become active until November 1, 2026.
- Inspection stations charge separately. The calculator includes only the $2.75 state emissions portion when applicable, never an estimated station charge.

Texas buyer questions
Frequently asked questions
What is the base Texas registration fee for a passenger vehicle?
The base fee is $50.75 for a passenger vehicle or light truck weighing 6,000 pounds or less. Other categories and weights use different amounts.
What is the Texas inspection replacement fee?
For normal non-commercial vehicles, it is $7.50 with annual registration or $16.75 for a qualifying new vehicle receiving an initial two-year registration.
How much is the Texas electric vehicle registration fee?
The annual fee is $200 for a qualifying fully electric car or truck weighing 10,000 pounds or less. It does not apply to hybrids.
Does the calculator include county registration fees?
Only when you enter a known local amount. Texas county and local fees currently range from $0 to $31.50, so an unknown amount is shown as variable rather than guessed.
When is the $2.75 emissions fee included?
It is included only for an emissions-eligible, non-electric vehicle in a county where the program is active on the registration date. The separate inspection-station charge is not included.
Is Bexar County treated as an emissions county in October 2026?
No. The Bexar County emissions requirement becomes effective November 1, 2026, so the $2.75 state portion is not applied there before that date.
