Direct answer
How Much Is Pennsylvania Car Sales Tax?
Pennsylvania's ordinary vehicle sales-tax rate is 6%. A purchaser who resides in Allegheny County pays 7%, while a Philadelphia resident pays 8%. The percentage applies to the supported taxable vehicle amount after qualifying adjustments.
The same residence-based rates apply to a taxable Pennsylvania used car sale. A transaction can still need special handling when an exemption, out-of-state credit, lease, gift, or substantially understated purchase price is involved.
2026 sourcing rule
Which Pennsylvania Tax Rate Applies?
The calculator asks for the purchaser's county of residence. Pennsylvania's 2026 local sales-tax change sources the Allegheny and Philadelphia portions to the destination rather than relying on the vendor's location. Buying from a dealer in another Pennsylvania county does not by itself replace the purchaser's applicable residence rate.
- Most Pennsylvania counties: 6%
- Allegheny County residents: 7%
- Philadelphia residents: 8%
Calculation method
How the Pennsylvania Taxable Amount Is Calculated
The supported dealer calculation begins with the vehicle price, adds charges you have verified are taxable, and subtracts a documented seller discount and qualifying dealer-accepted trade-in.
Vehicle price + taxable additions − seller discount − qualifying dealer trade-in = taxable amount
The engine will not let the taxable amount fall below zero. Title, registration, lien, Road User Charge, agent fees, financing, and optional products are not included in this sales-tax-only result.
Trade-in treatment
Pennsylvania Trade-In Value vs. Trade Equity
A qualifying trade-in accepted as part of an ordinary dealer purchase can reduce the taxable amount by the dealer's full allowed value. The outstanding loan does not reduce that tax deduction.
For example, a $10,000 trade with a $12,000 payoff has negative $2,000 equity, but the supported sales-tax deduction remains $10,000. Equity affects the payment side of the deal; it is not the Pennsylvania trade-in sales-tax figure.
Private-party purchases
An ordinary private sale does not receive the dealer trade-in treatment. The calculator uses the entered purchase price, supported additions, and documented discount without deducting a separate vehicle sale or exchange.
Price adjustments
Seller Discounts and Taxable Additions
Enter a seller discount only when it is documented as reducing the selling price. Add a charge only when its Pennsylvania tax treatment has been verified. The calculator does not classify an entire dealer quote or assume that every fee is taxable.
Department of Revenue review
Warning About an Understated Vehicle Value
The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue may review a vehicle purchase when the reported price is substantially below fair market value and request evidence supporting the price. CarBuyerKit uses the amount entered; it does not guess a market value, determine whether review will occur, or calculate a possible later assessment.
Engine-backed example
Pennsylvania Used Car Sales Tax Example
$30,000 dealer purchase for an Allegheny County resident
This example is produced by the live Pennsylvania tax engine using the 7% resident rate.
- Vehicle price
- $30,000.00
- Verified taxable additions
- $500.00
- Verified seller discount
- − $1,000.00
- Qualifying dealer trade-in
- − $10,000.00
- Taxable amount
- $19,500.00
- State portion (6%)
- $1,170.00
- Allegheny local portion (1%)
- $195.00
- Estimated sales tax (7%)
- $1,365.00
The $12,000 payoff creates negative $2,000 trade equity, but it does not change the $10,000 qualifying trade-in deduction.
Pennsylvania sales tax questions
Frequently asked questions
What is the Pennsylvania car sales tax rate?
The rate is 6% for most Pennsylvania residents, 7% for Allegheny County residents, and 8% for Philadelphia residents.
Does the dealer location determine Pennsylvania vehicle sales tax?
Not by itself. The current local-tax sourcing rule uses the purchaser's residence or destination for the Allegheny and Philadelphia portions.
Does Pennsylvania charge sales tax on a used car?
Yes, a taxable used-vehicle purchase is generally subject to the applicable 6%, 7%, or 8% rate. Specific exemptions and credits are outside this calculator.
Does a trade-in reduce Pennsylvania car sales tax?
A qualifying trade-in accepted during an ordinary dealer sale can reduce the taxable amount by its full allowed value. A private sale does not receive this dealer trade-in treatment.
Does my trade-in payoff change the tax deduction?
No. The dealer's trade allowance controls the supported deduction. The loan payoff changes trade equity, not the amount deducted for sales-tax purposes.
What happens if the purchase price is far below market value?
The Department of Revenue may request proof of the reported price and can review substantially understated transactions. This calculator does not estimate fair market value or predict a review.
