Ohio vehicle registration fees for an ordinary passenger vehicle start with a $36 annual registration charge. The estimate can also include a Deputy Registrar fee, local permissive tax, and a yearly powertrain fee: $100 for a conventional hybrid, $150 for a plug-in hybrid, or $200 for a battery-electric vehicle. The selected registration term can be one to five years.

The main parts of an Ohio registration estimate

The $36 combines the $20 passenger license tax in ORC 4503.04(B) with the $16 annual addition in ORC 4503.10(C)(1)(a). The latter increased from $11 on January 1, 2026; that increase is already included in $36.

The $36 passenger registration amount and the selected annual permissive tax multiply by the registration term. Ohio's permissive tax is set locally in $5 increments, up to $30 per year in the current engine. Confirm the owner's municipality or township in the BMV taxing-district information.

The Deputy Registrar fee is based on the chosen term rather than multiplied as an annual charge. The current one-to-five-year schedule used by the calculator runs from $8 for one year to $24 for five years.

Full-year registration estimate = ($36 annual registration + annual permissive tax + annual powertrain fee) × term + Deputy Registrar fee. Ordinary first standard plates add no $10 retention charge. Mailing, transaction-specific issuance fees, and partial-year proration are excluded. A transfer or replacement on a current registration uses its own transaction path below.

Ohio passenger registration fuel-type fees used by the calculator
PowertrainAnnual registrationAnnual powertrain fee
Gasoline, diesel, or other$36.00$0.00
Conventional hybrid$36.00$100.00
Plug-in hybrid$36.00$150.00
Battery electric$36.00$200.00

Hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicle charges

The annual powertrain fee is $100 for a conventional hybrid, $150 for a plug-in hybrid, and $200 for a battery-electric vehicle. These charges are added to the $36 passenger registration and are applied for each year in the selected term by the existing calculator engine.

Plate options: ordinary first plate, eligible transfer, and number retention

The eligible plate or registration transfer costs $9 including the deputy registrar fee. This calculator's transfer-only path assumes a valid same-class registration with no additional tax or fuel-fee difference. It does not charge another full registration or renew the existing term. Under ORC 4503.12, the BMV may calculate a difference after crediting unused registration; expired registration, renewal, vehicle-class changes, and powertrain changes need a BMV quote.

The $10 charge is a plate-number retention fee. It applies when a person specifically chooses to keep the same distinctive plate number/letter combination on replacement plates within the same general plate class. It is not added for an ordinary first standard plate or for a single duplicate plate replacing one that was lost, mutilated, or destroyed. The calculator shows the $10 only when the replacement-plate number-retention option is selected.

The supported current-registration exchange of one standard passenger plate costs $15 with the deputy fee included, plus $10 to retain its number: $25 before mailing. This replacement-only path does not renew registration or repeat annual hybrid/EV charges.

Specialty, personalized, commercial, and other nonstandard plate costs are outside this ordinary passenger-vehicle estimate.

Worked example: three-year battery-electric registration

The Ohio registration engine returns $784.00 for this renewal: $108 passenger registration, $60 permissive tax, $600 battery-electric fees, and a $16 Deputy Registrar fee. There is no plate transfer or replacement in this example.

Choose the term and local tax before comparing totals

A one-year estimate and a multi-year estimate can differ because annual charges repeat while the Deputy Registrar amount follows its own term schedule. The calculator does not guess the permissive tax from county alone; select the current amount for the owner's local district.

For the purchase tax side of the transaction, use the Ohio car sales tax calculator and read the Ohio car sales tax guide. The Ohio Tax, Title & License Calculator combines supported tax, title, and registration estimates.

Ohio vehicle registration questions buyers ask

How much is standard Ohio vehicle registration?

The annual passenger registration amount is $36. A final estimate may also include local permissive tax, a powertrain fee, a Deputy Registrar fee, and a selected plate transaction.

How much is Ohio's electric vehicle registration fee?

The calculator adds $200 per year for a battery-electric vehicle, on top of the $36 annual passenger registration and any selected permissive tax.

What are the Ohio hybrid and plug-in hybrid fees?

The supported annual fees are $100 for a conventional hybrid and $150 for a plug-in hybrid. The battery-electric amount is $200 per year.

What is Ohio's permissive tax?

It is a local registration tax selected for the owner's municipality or township. The calculator supports $5 increments from $0 to $30 per year; confirm the applicable amount in the BMV district information.

Can I choose a multi-year registration term?

Yes. This estimate supports one through five years. Annual registration, permissive tax, and powertrain charges repeat for each selected year; the Deputy Registrar fee uses a separate term schedule.

When does the $10 plate-number retention fee apply?

Only when you request to retain the same distinctive number on replacement plates within the same general plate class. It does not apply to an ordinary first standard plate or a single duplicate replacement plate.

How much does an eligible Ohio plate transfer cost?

The eligible current-registration transfer costs $9 including its deputy fee. The calculator does not add annual renewal charges to this path. Confirm any tax, credit, fuel-type, or vehicle-class adjustment with the BMV.
