Choose the transaction that matches the sale; Georgia uses different value rules for each path.
For dealer sales, include taxable documentary, delivery, freight, accessory, and other dealer charges before the trade and rebate deductions below.
Use the dealer’s accepted allowance, not trade equity. Private-party purchases do not qualify for this deduction.
Deducted on the supported new-dealer path only.
The reduced new-resident path is eligibility-based; confirm with DOR or your county tag office.
BEVs owe the annual fee either way. PHEVs owe it only when electing an AFV plate.
Transfer requires a valid existing Georgia plate of the same class. A new AFV plate may add a one-time manufacturing fee.

Georgia title and tag transfer

An ordinary Georgia title transfer combines TAVT with title and tag costs

For a supported ordinary purchase, plan for TAVT based on the Georgia value rule, the $18 title fee, and either the $20 new passenger plate/registration charge or a $5 eligible Georgia plate transfer. The plate transfer is available only when the existing valid plate is eligible for the vehicle class.

Private-party purchases use the Georgia assessment-manual value for TAVT. This estimate does not assume the bill-of-sale price alone controls. It also does not automatically apply special family, gift, inheritance, salvage, or exemption rates.

Engine example: private-party transfer with a new plate

A $18,000 private-party purchase with a $20,000 Georgia manual value uses $20,000 as the TAVT basis.

Manual value × 7% TAVT
$1,400.00
Title application
$18.00
New passenger plate/registration
$20.00
Estimated transfer total
$1,438.00

If the buyer instead transfers an eligible valid Georgia plate of the same class, registration fee in this example becomes $5 rather than $20; total would be $1,423.00.

The title application is generally due within 30 days of purchase/transfer; a $10 late title penalty may apply after that deadline. The $10 is not added unless selected. See the Georgia TTL calculator for a broader government-fee subtotal.

Common transfer mistakes

  • Assuming the purchase price always controls instead of entering the manual value for a private-party transfer.
  • Treating the $5 transfer and $20 new-plate charges as cumulative.
  • Automatically adding a late penalty before the 30-day deadline.
  • Applying an ordinary transfer estimate to a family transfer, gift, inheritance, or exemption.

Georgia title-transfer questions

Frequently asked questions

How much is a Georgia vehicle title transfer?

The standard title fee is $18, but the total transaction may also include TAVT and registration or plate charges.

Does a Georgia private-party transfer owe TAVT?

Most titled vehicle ownership transfers are subject to TAVT. The ordinary private-party path uses the Georgia assessment-manual value.

Can I transfer my old Georgia plate?

A valid Georgia plate may be transferred at the county tag office if the plate and new vehicle are the same class. The listed transfer charge is $5.

How long do I have to apply for a title?

Georgia generally requires a title application within 30 days. A $10 late title penalty may apply when the deadline is missed.

Is a family transfer calculated the same way?

No. Georgia has special family-transfer and inheritance provisions with affidavit and eligibility requirements. This ordinary-transfer estimate does not apply those special rates.

Does this estimate include every county tag-office charge?

No. It includes the supported state title and passenger plate/registration amounts. Emissions testing, specialty tags, penalties beyond the selected title penalty, and transaction-specific requirements are excluded.
