Review Ohio dealer charges
Separate Ohio government fees from dealer charges
An Ohio dealer fee checker organizes quote lines; it does not decide that a dealer has acted illegally or that an unfamiliar charge is improper. Enter the amount, category, optional status, and whether a charge is included in the advertised price, then review the messages against your written buyer's order.
The documentary service charge is dealer-controlled, not a government fee. For 2026, the project uses a $398 CPI-derived figure from ORC 4517.261 and official CPI-W data. The statute also imposes a 10% contract-amount ceiling, excluding tax, title, registration, and negative equity. The applicable documentary ceiling is the lower of the two limits; at a $50,000 eligible contract amount, 10% is $5,000, so the $398 CPI amount is lower.
Qualifying documentary service charges are exempt from Ohio sales tax. A separate registration/titling customer-convenience service has its own $50-per-vehicle limit and one-fee rule; it is not the documentary fee. Tax treatment for that convenience service and many other dealer line items is not automatically decided by this checker.
Government tax/title/registration lines are separated from dealer-controlled charges, optional products, and items needing review. Preparation, destination, advertising, and accessories can require advertised-price and tax review. Ask the dealer to explain duplicate-looking items and compare the complete advertised price with the contract; the category label alone is not a legal determination.

Ohio dealer fee questions
Frequently asked questions
Is an Ohio documentary fee a state fee?
No. It is a dealer-controlled documentary service charge authorized and limited by state law, separate from government tax, title, and registration.
What is the Ohio documentary fee cap for 2026?
The existing project calculation is $398 from the statutory CPI formula. The applicable amount is the lower of that figure or 10% of the eligible contract amount.
Does the 10% documentary limit include tax and title?
No. Ohio's eligible contract amount excludes tax, title, registration, and negative equity before applying the 10% ceiling.
Is the documentary service charge taxable in Ohio?
A qualifying charge imposed under ORC 4517.261 is exempt from Ohio sales tax under ORC 5739.02(B)(59).
Is the $50 registration convenience fee the same as the doc fee?
No. It is a separate registration/titling service charge with a separate $50-per-vehicle maximum and one-fee rule.
Does a flagged dealer charge mean it is illegal?
No. A flag means compare the item with its description, contract, advertised price, and official rules. This tool is a review aid, not a legal finding.
