Use this North Carolina dealer fee checker to sort quote line items

The North Carolina dealer fee checker organizes a quote into government charges, dealer-controlled fees, optional products or services, and items needing clarification. It flags questions about the advertised price, required-fee disclosure, itemization, and Highway Use Tax treatment. It does not decide whether a charge is fair, unlawful, or fraudulent.

No general statewide numeric maximum was identified in the official sources reviewed for this calculator. North Carolina law does require a conspicuous notice of an administrative fee, disclosure of its amount in vehicle-price advertising, and a separate line on the buyer’s order. The fee regulated by G.S. 20-101.1 is included in the HUT base.

Verified October 2026. This estimate follows the supported North Carolina transaction paths described below.

Government, dealer-controlled, and optional are different categories

Government charges include HUT, title, and registration amounts assessed under state rules. A dealer administrative/document fee is dealer-controlled, not a DMV fee; the project does not assign it a statewide numeric cap. Optional products should be checked against what you selected and what the contract says. A vague or duplicate line should be clarified with the dealer before you sign.

State law includes the regulated administrative fee in the HUT base. Separately stated motor-vehicle service-contract prices meeting the statute’s documentation condition are excluded from that HUT base. Other accessories and add-ons need to be evaluated based on what was provided and how it appears on the buyer’s order.

The last line is a diagnostic subset of the dealer-controlled total, not an additional fee. This illustration does not conclude that any charge is improper.

For an administrative fee, ask for the amount in writing, where it appeared in the advertised vehicle price, and how it is shown on the buyer’s order. Also confirm that a product listed as optional was actually selected.

North Carolina dealer fee questions

Frequently asked questions

Does North Carolina set a maximum dealer documentation fee?

No general statewide numeric maximum was identified in the official sources reviewed for this calculator. That statement is limited to the reviewed sources, not a legal conclusion about every fee or transaction.

Is a dealer administrative fee a government fee?

No. It is dealer-controlled. The state requires certain fee notices and disclosures, and a regulated administrative fee is part of the HUT base.

Does a dealer administrative fee increase HUT?

Yes, the HUT statute applies the tax to vehicle retail value plus a fee regulated under G.S. 20-101.1.

What should be disclosed about an admin fee?

State law requires conspicuous notice in the sales/finance area, disclosure of the amount in price advertising, and separate itemization on the buyer’s order, subject to statutory details and exceptions.

Is a service contract subject to HUT?

A service-contract price is excluded from the HUT base when separately stated on the bill of sale or similar document as required by statute. Other taxes or terms may still apply.

Does this tool determine whether a dealer charge is illegal?

No. It organizes charges and prompts questions; it does not make a legal finding or determine compliance in a specific sale.
