Michigan Electric Vehicle Registration Fees
Michigan's 2026 passenger EV registration surcharge is $267 and the PHEV surcharge published by SOS is $113, added to ordinary MSRP-based registration.
Published and verified October 2026
For calendar 2026, Michigan SOS publishes an additional passenger-vehicle registration surcharge of $267 for a battery-electric vehicle and $113 for a plug-in hybrid. These powertrain amounts are added to the normal MSRP-based registration tax and selected plate charges; they do not replace them.
Separate surcharge plus the regular Michigan registration
Michigan uses original MSRP and a statutory age-based fee level to calculate the ordinary passenger plate tax. The EV/PHEV amount is a separate annual addition. Therefore two vehicles with the same powertrain surcharge can still have different registration totals because their original MSRP, model year, prior registration, and plate path differ.
| Powertrain | SOS-published surcharge | Treatment in estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Gasoline/diesel/conventional hybrid | $0.00 | No separate passenger EV/PHEV surcharge |
| Battery electric (EV) | $267.00 | Added to MSRP-based registration and selected plate |
| Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) | $113.00 | Added to MSRP-based registration and selected plate |

Why the PHEV number is $113 here
The calculator follows the current Michigan SOS-published 2026 passenger PHEV amount of $113. MCL 257.801 expresses the surcharge using a base and increments per cent of fuel tax. Applying that statutory formula to Treasury's unrounded 52.4-cent 2026 motor-fuel rate yields $113.50, while SOS publishes $113. Because the statute's treatment of fractional-cent rounding is not explicit in the source material reviewed, the engine preserves the published SOS amount rather than silently substituting $113.50. Confirm the exact amount with SOS for a particular registration.
The discrepancy concerns the separate PHEV surcharge only. It does not change the MSRP-based registration tax. The Michigan registration guide explains the underlying schedule.
What can change the final EV registration bill
The calculator models ordinary 1984+ passenger vehicles for 2026. An actual SOS amount can differ due to prorating, vehicle/VIN details, class, plate transfer eligibility, specialty or personalized plates, and other charges. Specialty plates and commercial vehicles are not covered. Use the Michigan vehicle registration fee calculator as a full-year planning estimate.
