How Florida County Surtax Works When Buying a Car

Florida county surtax on a car purchase follows the purchaser's residence county and generally applies only to the first $5,000. See the rule and a worked example.

Florida car buyers comparing separate state and county vehicle tax amounts

Florida county surtax on a car purchase is separate from the 6% state vehicle tax. The applicable county rate follows the purchaser's residence address, and the county portion generally applies only to the first $5,000 of the taxable vehicle amount.

State tax and county discretionary sales surtax are separate

Florida's 6% state tax applies to the full taxable vehicle amount. A county may also impose a discretionary sales surtax, but that county calculation has its own rate and limitation.

Which county rate applies to a Florida car purchase?

The purchaser's residence address shown for title and registration determines the county rate for a motor vehicle. The dealership's address is not the deciding location.

This matters when a buyer lives in one county and purchases from a dealer in another. The calculator asks for purchaser county instead of guessing from dealer location or ZIP code.

How Florida’s $5,000 surtax cap works

Apply the county rate to the taxable amount only up to $5,000. If the taxable amount is $3,000, the county rate applies to $3,000. If it is $20,000, the county rate applies to $5,000.

County surtax = county rate × the smaller of the taxable amount or $5,000

The state's 6% tax does not stop at $5,000. That limit applies to the county discretionary sales surtax.

This example uses Miami-Dade County's verified 2026 rate and the same engine as the Florida car tax calculator.

Florida counties can have different or zero surtax rates

The official 2026 table includes different rates across Florida and counties with a 0% rate. A zero-rate county produces no county surtax, but the 6% state vehicle tax still applies.

Use the current county table

County rates can change by calendar year, so an older list may produce the wrong result. CarBuyerKit's Florida dataset follows the Department of Revenue's 2026 DR-15DSS table and records its verification date.
